Deepali Lugani

undefinedAttorney of Counsel

Deepali Lugani joined Daniel Shanfield Immigration Defense, P.C., in October 2018, where her work primarily focuses on waivers for inadmissibility and other grounds for removal. Her immigration law experience includes the full spectrum: asylum and removal defense, family immigration, naturalization, and employment-based immigrant and non-immigrant visas. In the past, Deepali ran her own law firm where she represented clients from Central America and South Asia persecuted on account of sexual orientation, gender identity, race & ethnicity, domestic violence, and trafficking. She has represented clients at USCIS San Francisco and San Jose, San Francisco Immigration Court, the BIA, the AAO, and filed petitions for review for indigenous and transgender clients at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Deepali’s foray into immigration law began as volunteer attorney at the Bay Area Legal Aid, San Francisco, where she served the low-income immigrant community. Subsequently, Deepali worked at a full-service immigration law firm in East Bay where she represented numerous individuals and technology companies on employment-based immigrant and non-immigrant visas.

Deepali is admitted to the bars of New York and Ontario, Canada. She obtained her J.D. cum laude in International Law from the University of Ottawa, Canada. She holds an LL.M. in International Law from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington D.C. Prior to entering immigration law, Deepali interned at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where she researched on the intersection of human rights law and international crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

Deepali is deeply committed to community service. Presently, she sits on the City of Sunnyvale’s Personnel Board where City Council appointed board members hear city employee appeals on personnel matters. Previously, she was Secretary for the American Immigration Lawyers Association – Santa Clara Valley Chapter (AILA-SCV), where she facilitated access to training and resources for immigration attorneys. Deepali is an active volunteer in the community and can be found at various immigration clinics in South Bay. In 2015, Deepali spent a week on the ground at a family-immigration detention center in Dilley, Texas. She subsequently wrote about her experience which was published in the California International Law Journal and moderated a panel on the same. After witnessing family separation firsthand, Deepali resolved to practicing immigration law reflecting her firm belief that family unity is, and should remain, the bedrock of our immigration policy.
